private reg plate

Postby longboarder » Fri Sep 30, 2011 8:00 am

Not really a Dutton issue but I need some help. Have a Lotus Espirit that I'm about to break for parts. On this Espirit is a very valueble private reg. no. The problem I have is how do I retain the plate to sell it without the car? Seems to lift a plate, the donor car has to have current MOT etc. This car would never get a MOT. Any ideas? I can sell the plate for twice the amount the car is worth. In spares alone I have orders for £2000 worth of bits!

You can transfer the plate if the car has had an MOT providing it expired no more than 364 days ago. If it hasn't had an MOT for more than a year either get it tested or bye bye reg plate

Unless... and I know this is not an economical proposition, you rebody the car but retain the original chassis, suspension, engine and drivetrain. Thats the minimum legal requirement for retaining a reg so I was informed by the DVLA/VOSA while chasing cloners.

Not what I wanted to hear!! But seems about right, the same thing has been told to me by other informants, Car needs about £2000 of work to get MOT. Reg plate is £4500, plus been offered £2000 for bits, so may be worth it. Just more hard work on dark nights, (yes here they come¬!)
