chevy v8 conversion phaeton dragster ...........

well i started out with this which i bought for the missus as she wanted it

that was about a year ago, i spent abit of time getting it going, pointless distributor conversion etc and she ran pretty good

Image

Image

i just lost the enthusiasm to finish it and get it back on the road, but now ive tried my hand at santa pod i really enjoyed it, so decided to build something for santa pod for me and the missus to drive, so i tried this old 327 chevy in for size

Image
Image
Image
Image

she fitted in a treat, so i dug out an old chevy c10 3" axle with 9" crownwheel proper 12 bolt one, welded up the diff so she lays the power down

Image
Image
Image
Image

i also welded a 1/4" plate in the planet gears aswell both sides for extra strength, i dropped the leaf springs and rolled her in

Image
Image

but the axle needed to be much lower so only option was to mount axle under the leaf springs

Image
Image
Image

still needs final allignment with new u bolts and mounting plates but pretty happy with position.
i next sorted the clutch and throttle conversion while the missus polished up some of the chrome/alloy bits, engine has been stood 10 years.

Image
Image
Image
Image

next i set about the header, i had some syamese headers lying around but needed to be extended so i set about altering them

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

pretty happy with the result tbh it allows me to run open headers for santa pod but add silencers for a track day :) will look 100 times better with some heat paint

the header conversion also made the steering very simple just one ford triangle uj joint and vwalla

Image
Image

so i removed the engine as engine mounts were just tacked and braced it all up

Image
Image

next i rebuilt the spitfire calipers and got some green stuff pads, also new wheel studs and nuts as whoever built the car originally decided to put on ford 4" pcd wheels and bent all the studs !
also removed the 180lb spitfire springs which were coilbound lol and fitted some gt6 480 lb springs

Image
Image

had a couple of trims with bonnet along the way

Image
Image

ive now stripped the engine to replace rear main seal and all looks well, just new headgaskets and fingers crossed all will be well, its all cleaned and covered now ready for assembly

Image
Image
Image
Image

gearbox is on the workbench awaiting a shifter that ive won on ebay.
and thats about it so far.
got a heck of alot done tbh as i didnt start the v8 conversion until the 3rd october 2 weeks ago tommorrow !
im off to scotland tommorrow for a holiday but work will progress to building the engine next saturday, any comments and ideas invited ;)

Fair play - that looks like its going to be a hoot - You may also want to check out the V8 Owners forum as there are quite a few guys there that go play at the pod regularly

I saw your original posts on another forum, turbosport possibly? anyway.. awesome job you have going there, nice little garage to work in too lol.
(ok so i'm jealous of the 'garage' :D )
glad to see that one being put to good use after so long.
Keep it up, join the club, write an article, scare everybody at the pod.

All the best with the project

sorry i was in a rush earlier, it was only running on 6 due to a broken distributor, it also got quite hot but the dizzy was arcking out inside causing it to run rough and run on when shut off,
i have rebuilt the distributor now, just need to get the new rear springs in and rear brakes repaired and piped in then try it again.

hopefully il have a decent video soon to put on here.

Thats altogether quite a scary beast.
Now I'm just guessing here but that engine and box has got to weigh more than the rest of the car.
Its going to fly when you have it setup the way you want it.

Sounds sweet, you've done a nice job on that.
How far are you going with the build after being ready for the Pod? Any plans to get it road legal or is it pure racecar?

well a few issues im sorting now i didnt even check pinion angle it was 7d positive at rest lol
ive dropped the rear of the engine 2" which has got me within 1" of the pinion, im relocating the axle to around -3d pinion angle, and also fitting lower parrallel angled tramp bars.
all being well santa pod will be next year mid year hopefully all painted up.

i plan on mot it aswell as a bit of fun, ive got a 900 hp road supra so no rush on the road legal side.

With that amount of rake on the body you may have removed all the front caster - if there was any - could make the handling a bit flighty at speed and even more interesting under braking.
