As far as I can find out all Mk1 2.0L Capri's had the Atlas axle and a 3.44 ratio - The 1600's had English axles - It may have been an opton on the later face lift 2.0L Pinto engined Capri's but I think they also had Atlas from my memory. - However all the English axles had ratio 3.77 in the Capri

The Cortina Mk2 had the same handbrake assembly on an English but none of them had a 3.54 ratio - As far as I can tell 3.77 being the lowest. - Your handbrake assembly has however been somewhat monsterfied.

The 3.54 ratio was the RS2000 escort ratio so whatever way you look at it your axle is a mongrel.

Be aware when getting a replacement diff that the lower powered cars - 1300 etc (3.89 ratio) had a smaller diff flange - so may not fit to your prop then again it may have the small flange fitted.

Escort diffs are getting pricey on e-bay and there is no guarantee that it will be any better than you have at the moment - best bet is to pull the diff and if the CW&P are in good order then refurb it with a English kit. -

Here is the problem with my diff, I was right it was a diff bearing, not the halfshaft bearings but the pinion bearing,

and here is the no. of teeth

11 teeth is a MK2 Escort 1600 ratio so its probably had a swap in its life - those teeth look a bit shiney but bound to be with the state of that pinion bearing - surprised you didnt get a warning that is was breaking up.

What are the teeth like profile wise? even wear shown along the ridge of the tooth?

The teeth look very good actually with a clean sharp profile and no obvious wear/ hooking, the diff was slightly noisy, but the n/s wheel bearing would account for that, but the diff was never overly noisy just normal wear and tear. The diff casing had 3.54-1 written in yellow paint on it but it occurs to me counting teeth will give a better result, how do i determine which flange i have?
Have you ever set the preload on a diff or would you recomend just bunging in new bearings and hope for best?

Only ever done an Alfa diff as the factory manual lists the diff weights and the full setting sequence including the paintmarking of the teeth to check the mesh and adjust the shimming.

I dont know whats available as information to set up the English but pretty sure a google will come up with something.

yeah looking very seriously in to rebuilding diff, bearings are fairly cheap to get as much as the front oil seal at about 10-15 quid each, preload sequence looks to be a real hassle.

my flange is 9cm diameter so that i think is a small one, i have bought a 3.89 -1 diff with small flange for 50 quid ( a bit steep, but the going rate it appears) although 500 quid for for a 4.1 LSD is the dearest offered. my diff will be rebuilt in the coming months and if the engine problems are resolved (cant put my finger on it but it dont run right) the diff will go back on.
